The Aims
The Software Engineering Research Seminar is for students who choose the
Research Option of the M.S. Software Engineering program, which consists of SE690 followed by
either SE696 (Master's Project) or SE698 (Master's Thesis).
The SE seminar meetings are open to all students.
A student may start to attend SE seminar meetings without officially registering SE690.
The aims of the SE seminars are:
- to expose students to the most current developments and trends in the field
of software engineering;
- for students to improve their presentation, communication, and writing skills;
- to prepare students for their Master's projects or theses; and
- to provide a forum for students to present their research work to offer critiques of other's work.
Requirements of the Research Option
Attendance and Participation
The Software Engineering Seminar meets during the Fall, Winter and Spring quarters.
There are no meetings during the summer.
Students may not take SE690 concurrently with SE696 or SE698.
So it takes at least 2 quarters for students to complete the Research Option.
Students are only
required to register for SE690 (4 credit hours) once and followed by SE696 or SE698 (4 credit hours).
After that, students are required to register SE691 (0 credit hours)
until they successfully complete all the requirements of the Research Option.
Each student is required to:
-
Deliver the following presentations and reports:
- A formal research proposal, which must be approved by the research adviser.
- An initial presentation of the proposal at a research group meeting
arranged by the research adviser.
- A progress report and an intermediate presentation at a research group meeting
arranged by the research adviser.
- For Master's Project (SE696), a final report and a formal final presentation at
a general meeting of SE690 attended by all current software engineering students in the research phase.
The general meetings are scheduled at the end of Fall, Winter and Spring quarters.
For students who reside outside the Chicago area, the final presentations may be delivered via
video conferencing.
- For Master's Thesis (SE698), a thesis and a defense in front a committee that consists of three faculty
members, including the research adviser. The thesis defense is open to all students.
- Maintain a web site on your research
project using the provided template
until the completion of all requirements. The proposals,
reports, and presentations must be posted on the web-site.
A draft of the final report or thesis must be made available on the
web site four weeks before the scheduled final presentation or defense.
-
All students should either attend workshops on research-related skills development
or view the recorded workshops on-line.
- Participate in the peer review
process.
Each student who has completed his or her research proposal
must review two final reports or theses of other students.
Drafts of the final reports or theses to be reviewed should be made available by the authors
on their project web site four weeks before the scheduled final presentations or defenses.
The reviews must be completed and submitted one week before the scheduled final presentations or defenses.
- Participate in the CTI Research Symposium
by contributing a poster or
a paper presentation.
-
The specific requirements and deliverables may vary depending on the
nature of the projects or theses. The requirements and deliverables
shall be decided by the advisers of the projects or
theses individually.
Grades for SE690
You will only receive a grade after successful completion of all the requirements.
If you do not complete all the requirements in the quarter you registered for SE690,
you will receive a 'R' grade for continuing research.
Distinction for Software Engineering Students in the Research Option
The criteria for students who choose the Research Option of M.S. Software Engineering to
receive distinction at graduation are:
- Receive an 'A' grade in SE696 or SE698, and
- Maintain a GPA of 3.9 or better.
